Its ability to grow straight upwards like bamboo has made it an auspicious plant symbolizing vitality, and it has been in designs for Noh costumes and kimonos since ancient times. In Kyushu, Arita ware and Hasami ware are known as "Tokusa" and are still commonly today to depict vertical striped patterns. Ichimatsu pattern Ichimatsu is a traditional Japanese pattern consisting of regularly alternating squares. Since its popularity in Kabuki costumes during the Edo period, it has been widely in craft designs as a symbol of good fortune, representing "prosperity," "development," and "harmony." Ichimatsu can be considered a variation of the "check" and "grid" patterns found around the world.
